چکیده

“It’s not what you play, but how you play it”. The term “robotic performance” has traditionally been used to describe a musical performance that lacks expression and evokes no emotion from listeners. Indeed, current instrumentplaying robots have achieved high technical proficiency, but “perfect” performances of a piece are not necessarily considered musical. In this paper, we propose a Programming by Playing approach which gives musical expression to robot performances. We further examine precisely what makes music robots play more or less “robotically”, and survey the field of musical expression in search of a good model to make robots play more like humans.

Design of an Adaptive Fuzzy Estimator for Force/Position Tracking in Robot Manipulators

This paper presents a stable new algorithm for force/position control in robot manipulators. In this algorithm, position vectors are measured by sensors and then used in the control law. Since using force sensor has some issues such as high costs and technical problems, an approach is presented to overcome these issues. In this respect, force sensor is replaced by an adaptive fuzzy estimator to...

Playing with Cases: Rendering Expressive Music with Case-Based Reasoning*

■ This paper surveys long-term research on the problem of rendering expressive music by means of AI techniques with an emphasis on Case-Based Reasoning. Following a brief overview discussing why people prefer listening to expressive music instead of non-expressive synthesized music, we examine a representative selection of well-known approaches to expressive computer music performance with an e...

Study of Evolutionary and Swarm Intelligent Techniques for Soccer Robot Path Planning

Finding an optimal path for a robot in a soccer field involves different parameters such as the positions of the robot, positions of the obstacles, etc. Due to simplicity and smoothness of Ferguson Spline, it has been employed for path planning between arbitrary points on the field in many research teams. In order to optimize the parameters of Ferguson Spline some evolutionary or intelligent al...

A closed-loop control system for robotic hi-hats

While most musical robots that are capable of playing the drum kit utilise a relatively simple striking motion, the hihat, with the additional degree of motion provided by its pedal, requires more involved control strategies in order to produce expressive performances on the instrument. A robotic hi-hat should be able to control not only the striking, timing, and velocity to a high degree of pr...

An Expressive Approach to Distributed Applications Dynamic Adaptation

Dynamically adaptable distributed applications need to be composed in an expressive and modular fashion due to the complexity of these applications. This paper discusses the shortcomings of recent approaches to achieve this goal, in particular the aspect-oriented programming approaches. It addresses the requirements for consistent and modular dynamic adaptation of applications, while improving ...
